Carmen Ocasio Nieves

July 14, 1925 — April 20, 2025

Picayune, Mississippi

Carmen Nieves went to be with the Lord on April 20, 2025, at age 99, in Picayune, Mississippi.

Carmen, daughter of Hipolito Ocasio Vasques and Vicenta Garcia Marrero, was born in Corozal, Puerto Rico. Carmen was one of 7 children. Early in her life she worked as a dedicated home maker and chef prior to meeting her husband, Maximo (deceased) as a teenager. They started their family in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, but lived predominately in New Orleans, LA where they raised their four children: Carmen Spears, Michael Nieves Jr., Margaret Nieves, and Yolanda Loveless. Maximo's work kept him away from home for long periods of time, leaving Carmen to manage the household. Upon retirement, Carmen and Maximo moved to Picayune, Mississippi where together they embraced their sunset years dedicated to good food, family time, and occasional casino visiting. They enjoyed 65 wonderful years together prior to Maximo's passing.

During her life, Carmen's favorite things were centered around a dinner table. She will be remembered by her loved ones as the best cook of all time; bringing her authentic Puerto Rican flavors mixed with an American southern edge. If not cooking, she enjoyed spending time with her family and entertaining people, telling stories, and playing cards. Lastly, Carmen's ultimate vice is a trip to the casino with her daughters and grandchildren.

Carmen is lovingly remembered by her children. Carmen Spears, Michael Nieves Jr., Margaret Nieves, and Yolanda Loveless (Dub); her 12 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and sister, Isabel Hernandez. Carmen's memory will also be forever treasured by extended family and dear family friends.

A visitation will be held on April 25, 2025, at 1pm with a funeral service to follow at 3pm at Picayune Funeral Home located at 815 S. Haugh Ave. Picayune, MS 39466. A Celebration of Carmen's life will be held after the burial ceremony at Cotton Blossoms located at 319 W Canal St., Picayune, MS 39466.

All arrangements are under the direction of Picayune Funeral Home.
