A gentle wind flew across the land reaching out to take a hand.Far on the winds the angels came, calling out a father's name.The angels came for Merle Blackshear, age 83 on Sunday, August 2, 2009 at 6:25 a.m. He was a native of Freeport, Brazoria County, Texas and a resident of Port Sulphur, Louisiana for 70 years. Hurricane Katrina took their home in 2005 and relocated them to Carriere, Mississippi where they have made their new home.
Merle is survived by his wife of 57 years, Thurza Chevalier Blackshear two daughters, Glenda and her husband, Danny Wheeler of Carriere, Mississippi Judith and her husband, Doug Baird of Springdale, Arkansas
one son, Timothy Blackshear and his wife, Lisa of Mandeville, Louisiana. He was a loving "Paw-Paw" and "Gramps" of six grandchildren ,Jarrod Wheeler, Cooper and Afton Baird, Brooke and Brianna Blackshear and the late Jill Wheeler; two great-grandchildren; Mason Wheeler-Shigley and Evan Wheeler. Merle was the twin brother of Harvey Earl Blackshear, Jr. of Picayune, MS. Also left to cherish his memories are many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death and welcomed home by his brother Albert Blackshear, twin sisters, Edith Buras and Ethel Pousson, and his parents Harvey Earl Blackshear, Sr. and Katie Peikert Blackshear.
Merle's faith and his family were the most important things in his life. He was retired from Freeport Sulphur Company after 35 years of service. He then went to work for the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office as a jailer. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day-Saints and was a Branch President for 35 years. After retirement, Merle and Thurza served a Temple Mission in Atlanta, Georgia. He was also a life member of V.F.W. Post 6402.
Relatives and Friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on 1720 Read Road in Picayune, MS from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2009. Bishop David Navo will officiate at the service. Interment will follow the service at West Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Carriere, Mississippi
